Elsie Sullivan Sellers, 85, died Wednesday afternoon, August 19, 2020 in the home she shared with her daughter and family in Smithfield.
Elsie was born in Johnston County on June 8, 1935, one of four children of Albert Braxton and Lee Ora Capps Sullivan. Her parents and three siblings, (an infant brother; sister, Nora Blackman; and brother, Jarvis Sullivan) all preceded her in death.
She graduated from Selma High School, then obtained her certification as a hairdresser. For a number of years she was the owner/operator of Elsie’s Beauty Shop. She also worked as an elementary school teacher’s aide. Elsie was a life-long member of Live Oak Baptist Church.
Elsie was a strong willed, independent woman. There was no question as to what was on her mind, for she was going to share her opinion, be it right, wrong or indifferent. She loved her family, and thought the world of all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also a die-hard fan of NC State Wolfpack football and basketball.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Art and Belinda Sellers of Roanoke Rapids; daughter and son-in-law, Melodie S. and Ricky Ward of Smithfield; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews, and a large Capps and Sullivan extended family.
In keeping with Elsie’s wishes, her cremated remains were buried, alongside her parents, in the Sullivan Family Cemetery following a private committal service attended by immediate family.
