John Andrew “Andy” Walker, 78, of Windsor, NC died peacefully March 12, 2026, with his family by his side at ECU Medical,Bertie Hospital.

Andy was born on November 9, 1947, to the late Johnny Walker and Lillie Hobbs Walker. He was a lifelong resident of Windsor. He graduated from Gupton Jones College of Mortuary Science in Dallas, Texas in 1970 with honors. He was a funeral director and embalmer for over 56 years and worked in the family business since he was a young boy. Andy purchased the Byrd-Walker Funeral Home in 1976 and at that time it became Walker Funeral Home. Andy owned five funeral homes over the course of his life and was the owner of Walker Arts. Andy was the Mayor of Windsor for a short time, a member of the city council, he was a past President of the North Carolina Funeral Directors Association, a volunteer fireman in his younger days, a member of the Windsor Rotary Club, he was the voice of the Bertie Falcons football team, a little league football coach and a member of both Cashie and Roanoke country clubs. Most importantly he was a member at St. Thomas Episcopal Church.

Andy was preceded in death by his parents; sons: John Andrew Walker “Drew” and Edward Morgan Walker; sister, Sara Walker Durham; brother, Wallace Walker; beloved Aunt Lettie Walker Williams, sister-in-law, Amy Jo Ginn-Brewer; half-sister, Suzanne Lea Cobb and Buddy the Dog.

Andy is survived by his wife Tammie G. Ginn-Walker of the home; daughters: Reagan Walker of Raleigh and Brooks Walker of Durham; son, Maxwell Andrew Walker (Summer) of Smithfield; sister, Lou Walker Miller (Eddie) of Kitty Hawk; brother-in-law, “Coach” Ray Durham; granddaughter, Ivy Lee Walker of Smithfield; father-in-law, Marshall D Ginn and mother-in-law, Brenda G. Ginn of Hurricane, WV; baby dogs, Lady Charleston of Windsor and Princess Isabella of Windsor and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, March 17th at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Windsor with Reverend,Samson Mamour officiating. A reception will follow immediately in the Cooper Parrish Hall. The family will receive visitors at Walker funeral home in Windsor on Monday, March 16, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM and other times at the home.

Memorial gifts may be made in Andy’s memory to Windsor Volunteer Fire Department, 501 North King Street, Windsor, NC 27983 or St. Judes’s Children Hospital, PO Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101.
