Munden Funeral Home and Crematory, located in Morehead City, NC, is seeking a licensed funeral director/embalmer for a full-time position. POSITION SUMMARY:

The Laboratory Manager will coordinate operations within the gross anatomy laboratory under the direction of the Dean of the Congdon School of Health Sciences and the Director of the Willed Body Program.

The Human Cadaveric Laboratory Manager is responsible for overseeing, managing and preforming the setup and breakdown of anatomical and fresh tissue laboratories, preparation of human cadaveric specimens (embalming), and the tracking and disposal of human cadaveric material that is received through the Willed Body Program at High Point University for the Congdon School of Health Sciences. The position is responsible for all aspects associated with the use of the gross anatomy, fresh tissue, embalming and anatomical specimen laboratories and will support the Willed Body Program under the direction of the Dean of the Congdon School of Health Sciences and the Director of the Willed Body Program.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

•Minimum: Associate’s degree in science related area from an accredited mortuary school.

•Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in science related area from an accredited mortuary school.

•Preferred: Valid North Carolina Embalmer or Funeral Service License and/or the ability to obtain license in the state of North Carolina.

Experience and Training

•Minimum: Two years of experience in the internal workings of a human cadaver laboratory, morgue, funeral home, mortuary, crematory, hospital, emergency services or other experience requiring direct work with cadavers.

•Preferred: Four years of experience in the internal workings of a human cadaver laboratory, morgue, funeral home, mortuary, crematory hospital, emergency services or other experience requiring direct work with cadavers.

Knowledge, Skills, Ability:

•Knowledge of laboratory equipment, materials and procedures.

•Knowledge of safety and health procedures for handling potentially-hazardous chemicals and organic material.

•Knowledge of the internal workings of a human cadaveric laboratory and the rules and regulations of the Uniform Anatomical Gift act as it pertains to the use of cadavers for educational purposes.

•Knowledge of North Carolina and Federal laws governing cadaver use as it pertains to educational use, cremations and death registration.

•Knowledge of OSHA laboratory health and safety regulations and compliance as it relates to the use of human cadaveric tissue.

•Knowledge of various embalming techniques and the ability to learn new techniques for anatomical embalming.

•Experience managing and maintaining the privacy of information and the confidentiality of records.

•Strong organizational and reporting skills to develop or maintain the various aspect of laboratory operation, i.e. development of a coding system for the use and disposition of cadaveric materials, development of a scheduling system for end users in utilizing anatomy and fresh tissue laboratories and other reports and records keeping as needed.

•Computer competency in the Microsoft Office Suite, particularly in the maintenance of databases and spreadsheets.

•Good problem solving skills with the ability to develop and provide solutions and make decisions based on areas of concern using discretion and applying departmental policies and procedures.

•Familiarity with and/or coursework relevant to human anatomy dissection is advantageous.

•Ability to work as a team; good time-management skills; good interpersonal/human relations skills.

•Ability to communicate effectively orally, in writing and through technology.

•Ability to track inventory and keep a detailed budget.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

45% Laboratory Management

Clean, organize and maintain the anatomy, fresh tissue, embalming and anatomical specimen laboratories including all equipment, tools, models, physical space and other associated items within.

Provide logistical support required to assist faculty, staff, undergraduate and graduate students, and other internal and external users with program needs including but not limited to, prosection material, plastinated specimens, models, videos and other learning materials.

Maintain and build upon a system that ensures the accounting of all laboratory resources, including models, tools, chemicals, proper protective equipment and associated technologies needed for higher learning and effectively keeping a detailed budget and inventory of items.

Work closely with the Office of Environmental Health, Safety and Preparedness to maintain the safety of all laboratories and its users related to the use of cadaveric materials, including chemical and sharps safety, air quality control, incident reporting, internal and external safety training, and other items necessary to promote a safe learning environment.

25% - Cadaveric Material Management

Disperse, maintain and dispose of human cadavers and human cadaveric specimens.

Prepare and embalm human cadavers for anatomical dissection, clinical training and other experiences.

Maintain and build upon a coding and physical system that allows for 100% accuracy regarding the receipt, issuance, location and final disposition cadavers and cadaveric specimens.

Prepare and create unique learning experiences utilizing fresh tissue cadavers, including but not limited to, lifesaving airway training, surgical skills training, wound management training and more.

15% Assisting the Willed Body Program

Assist with arranging community-based learning programs, tours and outreach events including the Impact Beyond Life Service.

Assist donors and donor families after hours with questions regarding whole-body donations.

Prepare reports for internal and external stakeholders.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Willed Body Program Director.

10% Scheduling and Training

Maintain and build upon application and scheduling system for all laboratory learning and experiences.

Train, guide and schedule student workers assigned to perform duties within the human cadaveric laboratories.

5% Regulation Compliance

Be knowledgeable about the Willed Body Program and the rules and regulations associated with the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act as it pertains to the use of human cadaveric material for educational purposes.

ACCOUNTABILITY:

The Human Cadaveric Laboratory Manager will report to the Director of the Willed Body Program who resides under the Dean of the Congdon School of Health Sciences.
